I wonder how many lives were saved because of the free swimming lessons offered by the Vancouver Sun and the Vancouver Province. I remember very clearly sitting on the grass in front of Lumberman's Arch in Stanley park and getting some dry-land instruction before venturing into the pool with the glamorous instructors. After that we'd wade into the pool in our classes to learn the front float and the dead man's float. Once we'd mastered those, we'd go on to learn the torpedo kick. Swimming has saved my life in a few ways and it continues to add to my quality of life. Check out the gallery for more news clippings from June 1959.
